An experimental Lancair Evolution made a forced landing on a road after engine power loss, sustaining substantial damage and fire; the pilot and two passengers suffered minor injuries.

Accident Overview

On July 27, 2025, at approximately 1010 Pacific daylight time, an experimental amateur-built Lancair Evolution (registration N505RF) was destroyed in an accident near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The aircraft was operating as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot and two passengers sustained minor injuries.

Flight History

According to the pilot's report, the flight began with an uneventful takeoff. The airplane proceeded south to the northern end of Coeur d'Alene Lake before turning back toward the airport. During the turn to the base leg of the traffic pattern, the pilot received a low oil pressure warning, followed by a complete loss of engine power.

Forced Landing and Post-Crash Fire

Unable to reach the airport, the pilot executed a forced landing on a road. After touchdown, the airplane departed the left side of the road, causing the landing gear to separate. The aircraft skidded before coming to rest. The occupants evacuated the airplane, and by the time they reached a safe distance, most of the airplane had been consumed by a postcrash fire.

Examination

The wreckage was recovered to a secure facility for further examination. No additional details regarding the cause of the engine failure or the extent of the damage have been released.
