What happened
On July 27, 2025, at approximately 10:10 Pacific daylight time, a Lancair Evolution aircraft, N505RF, was involved in an accident near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The flight was being operated under 14 CFR Part 91 for personal use.
Following an uneventful takeoff, the pilot flew south toward the northern end of Coeur d’Alene Lake before turning back toward the airport. While performing a turn to the base leg of the traffic pattern, the pilot received a low oil pressure warning, after which the engine lost all power.
Unable to reach the airport, the pilot performed a forced landing on a road. During the landing, the aircraft departed the left side of the roadway, causing the landing gear to separate. The airplane skidded before coming to a stop. The three occupants of the aircraft sustained 3 minor injuries and were not fatal.
After the occupants exited the aircraft and reached a safe distance, a post-crash fire consumed most of the airplane.
