What happened
On August 7, 2025, at 09:35 mountain daylight time, a Cirrus SR22, registration N412DJ, was involved in an accident near Jaroso, Colorado. The flight was being conducted under 14 CFR Part 91 as an instructional flight.
The pilot was performing engine lean test procedures at an altitude of 10,500 ft MSL. After completing one test, the pilot began a second procedure when the engine experienced a sudden loss of power. The flight instructor attempted to follow the emergency loss of engine power checklist to restart the engine, but the attempt failed. Due to the lack of nearby airports, the crew activated the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS).
The parachute deployed at approximately 1,500 ft AGL. The aircraft remained under the canopy for approximately 20 seconds before a hard landing occurred. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage and both wings.
Injuries
There were 2 serious injuries involving the student pilot and a passenger, while the flight instructor was not injured.
