What happened

On August 6, 2025, at approximately 19:25 CDT, a Vans RV4, registration N595BS, was conducting a personal flight under Part 91 regulations when it experienced a series of mechanical failures near Elgin, Illinois.

While cruising at 1,000 feet above ground level, the pilot observed an increase in electrical voltage. As the pilot turned the aircraft back toward the departure airport, the voltage reached 20 volts, followed by a total loss of power to the instrument panel and a subsequent loss of engine power. The pilot also observed a small plume of smoke originating from behind the instrument panel.

The pilot performed a forced landing on a golf course. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the engine mount and fuselage. The pilot and passenger were not injured.

The investigation

The engine was equipped with two E-Mag electronic ignition systems, and both magnetos were recovered for examination. The aircraft was retained for further inspection, and any devices capable of recording flight data were sent to the N/TSB Vehicle Recorders Laboratory for analysis.
