What happened
On September 4, 2025, at approximately 1418 EDT, a Czech Sport Aircraft Sportcruiser, registration N336SC, was involved in a fatal accident near Fryeburg, Maine. The flight was being operated under 14 CFR Part 91 for personal use. The intended purpose of the flight was to reposition the aircraft from Eastern Slopes Regional Airport (IZG) to Moultonborough Airport (4MB) due to upcoming construction at the departure airport.
According to reports from the pilot's son, the aircraft had been refueled earlier that day with 8 gallons of non-ethanol unleaded gasoline, bringing the total fuel load to 13 gallons (7 gallons in the left wing and 6 gallons in the right wing).
ADS-B data indicated that the aircraft departed runway 14 at IZG and climbed to a maximum altitude of approximately 2,100 ft MSL. Shortly after reaching this altitude, the aircraft began a descent at a rate of about 500 ft/min, followed by a left turning descent. The final recorded data point showed the aircraft at 1,700 ft MSL with a descent rate of approximately 1,300 ft/min on a flight track of 025°.
Witnesses on the ground reported hearing a "loud pop" and observing the aircraft in a dive. One witness at the airport reported hearing a "bang" and seeing the aircraft in a left spin approximately 1,000 ft AGL, directed toward the ground. The aircraft impacted a tree and came to rest in a wooded area about 1 nautical mile from the departure airport. The pilot sustained 1 fatal injury.
