What happened
On December 15, 2025, at approximately 15:26 Pacific standard time, a Beechcraft G36, registration N360FV, was involved in an accident near Tracy, California. The aircraft was being operated as a private flight under 14 CFR Part 91.
The flight originated from Palo Alto Airport (PAO) with a destination of Lake Tahoe, California. The engine had undergone an overhaul approximately 10 hours before the flight. While cruising at 17,000 feet MSL, the pilot observed an oil pressure alert and a gradual decline in engine oil pressure. The pilot responded by reducing power and configuring the aircraft for best glide speed.
After notifying Air Traffic Control (ATC) and requesting vectors to Livermore Airport (LVK), the engine began running roughly. This was followed by a loud bang, the appearance of white smoke, and oil covering the engine cowling and windscreen. Smoke entered the cockpit, which reduced visibility and forced the pilot to adjust the ventilation cannula to maintain airflow.
Realizing the aircraft could not reach LVK, the pilot declared an emergency and requested vectors to Tracy Municipal Airport (TCY). During the attempted glide to TCY, the aircraft landed short of the runway, slid through a field, and came to rest in an irrigation canal. The pilot sustained 1 minor injury and was not killed.
The investigation
Preliminary examination of the aircraft showed substantial damage to the fuselage and the engine compartment. The aircraft was recovered and held for further inspection.
