What happened
On 25 March 2026, a Piper Malibu PA-46-310P, registered N46MB, was conducting a US CFR Part 135 operation from Rafael Hernández Airport in Puerto Rico toward Exuma International Airport in the Bahamas. The flight, operated by UpperJets, carried two occupants.
While cruising at approximately 16,000 feet, the pilot noted initial vibrations and subsequently reported engine roughness to the company operations center. Following these indications, the pilot elected to divert to Mayaguable Airport. During the descent, the pilot observed a continuous rise in engine temperature alongside a steady decline in oil pressure. At approximately 8,000 feet, a loud bang was heard, followed by a complete loss of engine power.
In an effort to manage the descent, the pilot performed maneuvers to maintain control while approaching the runway. The landing gear was extended and flaps were deployed. The aircraft landed on runway 06/24, coming to a stop approximately 568 feet from the threshold. There were no injuries reported, though the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
The investigation
The preliminary investigation focused on the sequence of mechanical failures leading to the engine's cessation of power. Investigators examined the period between the initial detection of vibrations and the final engine failure, noting the reported fluctuations in oil pressure and temperature. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's diversion decision and the execution of the emergency landing at Mayaguana Airport.
