What happened
On 2 November 2017, a Fairchild SA227-AC Metro III, registered as part of a repositioning flight, was traveling from Gods River, MB (CZGI) to Thompson, MB (CYTH). While approximately 40 nm southeast of Thompson, the flight crew notified air traffic control regarding a low oil pressure indication on the left engine, noting that a shutdown of the engine might be necessary.
Despite the mechanical concern, the aircraft arrived at Thompson with both engines still functioning. However, during the landing phase, the aircraft veered to the right and exited the runway. The incident resulted in two minor injuries to the pilot and co-pilot, both of whom were transported to a hospital for evaluation. The aircraft suffered substantial damage during the excursion.
The investigation
The TSB examined the sequence of events leading from the initial engine indication to the runway excursion. The investigation focused on the operational handling of the low oil pressure event and the subsequent loss of directional control on the runway.
