What happened
On 12 September 2021, an Airmédic Inc. Pilatus PC-12/47E, registered C-GIOX, was performing an instrument flight from Québec/Jean Lesage International Airport to Sept-Îles Airport. The flight, operated by a crew of two, was on final approach for Runway 09 when the aircraft was 1.6 nautical miles from the threshold, traveling at 242 knots indicated airspeed.
As the aircraft crossed the runway threshold, it was 200 feet above the ground with a descent rate of 2000 fpm. At that moment, the landing gear was still in transit and the flaps were fully retracted. The aircraft touched down on the wet runway surface approximately 2525 feet beyond the threshold at 159 knots indicated airspeed. Following the touchdown, the aircraft overran the runway at a ground speed of 57 knots, traveling roughly 590 feet into the grass before turning right around an approach light and returning to the runway. There were no injuries and the aircraft sustained no damage.
The investigation
The investigation focused on the aircraft's configuration and performance during the approach and landing phase. Investigators established that the aircraft was maintaining a high rate of descent and high airspeed as it crossed the threshold. The investigation also examined the state of the runway surface and the mechanical status of the landing gear and flaps during the final moments of the approach.
