Passenger injured during disembarkation at Jersey Airport

Casualties unknown • Stand 13, Jersey Airport, GB

A passenger sustained serious head injuries after tripping while descending aircraft steps at Jersey Airport following a commercial flight.

What happened

On 1 December 2017, an Airbus A319-111, registration G-EZFP, was parked at Stand 13 of Jersey Airport after completing a scheduled passenger flight from Liverpool. During the disembarkation process, a jetty was placed at door 1L and mobile steps were positioned at door 2L.

A 74-year-old passenger, who was carrying a trolley suitcase, began descending the rear steps first. Approximately six or seven steps from the bottom, the passenger tripped and fell forward. The fall resulted in one serious injury to the passenger's head. Following the fall, the individual received initial medical assistance from a passenger who was a nurse, and was subsequently treated by airport paramedics before being transported to a hospital. During the incident, remaining passengers were redirected to use the forward door.

The investigation

The investigation examined the condition of the ground equipment and the circumstances surrounding the passenger's descent. The commander noted that a broken shoe heel was discovered on the steps, which appeared to have originated from the passenger's footwear. Environmental conditions at the time were daylight with dry surfaces and light winds.

An inspection conducted by the ground handling agent confirmed that the steps used during the operation were fully serviceable, correctly positioned, and contained no contaminants or obstructions.

Findings

  • The accident was likely caused by the failure of the passenger's shoe heel while she was descending the steps.
  • The passenger's ability to utilize the handrail may have been compromised by the act of carrying a trolley suitcase.
  • The airline's existing safety procedures, which include a public address announcement reminding passengers to use the handrail and exercise caution, were in place at the time of the event.

Probable cause

The passenger's shoe heel broke during descent, and the presence of a suitcase may have prevented her from properly using the handrail.
