Canopy failure leads to ground impact at Firs Farm Airfield

Casualties unknown • Firs Farm Airfield, Berkshire, GB

A CZAW Sportcruiser experienced a sudden canopy opening during takeoff, resulting in a forced descent and substantial aircraft damage.

What happened

On 11 July 2025, a CZAW Sportcruiser, registration G-DVOY, was performing a private flight from Firs Farm Airfield in Berkshire. Following engine power checks, the pilot backtracked along Runway 05 for departure. Due to high ambient temperatures, the pilot elected to fly with the canopy open. The pre-takeoff sequence included checks for securing all harnesses and hatches.

Shortly after departing the runway, as the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 500 ft and was in the process of retracting flaps, the canopy lifted by one to two inches. As the pilot attempted to close the canopy, it suddenly swung open almost entirely. This sudden movement caused the aircraft to pitch downward toward the terrain.

While the pilot managed to grab the left gas strut to pull the canopy down to a height of about one foot, he was unable to simultaneously manipulate the control stick to reduce engine power or complete the flap retraction. The aircraft continued its descent and struck the ground. The pilot sustained minor injuries, and while the aircraft suffered substantial damage, no fire occurred. After the impact, the pilot successfully deactivated the ignition and electrical systems, though airframe damage prevented the fuel from being shut off.

The investigation

The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The inquiry focused on the sequence of events during the takeoff roll and the subsequent flight phase. Investigators examined the state of the canopy and the cockpit environment, including the presence of an iPad mounted to the canopy, which the pilot suggested might have contributed to the aerodynamic forces acting on the canopy.

Findings

  • The primary cause of the accident was the pilot's failure to fully latch the canopy during the pre-takeoff inspections.
  • The sudden opening of the canopy during the climb phase induced a significant nose-down pitch.
  • The pilot's need to physically restrain the canopy prevented the necessary flight control inputs required to maintain altitude and reduce power.

Probable cause

The accident was caused by the pilot's failure to ensure the canopy was properly secured during pre-flight checks, which allowed aerodynamic forces to force the canopy open during the climb, leading to a loss of control and subsequent ground impact.
