What happened
On 4 February 2018, a Dynamic WT9 UK, registration G-RMHE, was conducting a private flight involving practice circuits at Lane Farm Airfield in Powys. After completing several circuits at his home airfield, the pilot transitioned to Lane Farm to practice maneuvers on the 730 m grass runway.
During the final approach, the pilot attempted to correct a high approach by performing a sideslip to reduce altitude. Upon crossing the runway threshold, the pilot perceived the aircraft to be traveling at an excessive speed. As the aircraft made contact with the runway, it bounced several feet back into the air. Following this bounce, the nose of the aircraft dropped, leading the nosewheel to strike the ground. This impact caused the nosegear to collapse and resulted in the propeller striking the surface, which subsequently caused the engine to stop. The pilot was able to egress the aircraft without injury.
The investigation
The AAIB investigation examined the sequence of the landing and the aircraft's configuration. The investigation established that the pilot had utilized a sideslip technique to manage the descent profile. The physical damage to the aircraft included the nose gear, the propeller, and the engine cowling.
