What happened
On 10 January 2017, an EV-97 Teameurostar UK, registration G-CEFZ, was involved in a ground accident at Cotswold (Kemble) Airport in Gloucestershire. The aircraft was being operated for training purposes.
While taxiing following the pilot's first solo flight in two years, the right wingtip of the aircraft made contact with a fence. This initial impact redirected the aircraft toward the fence line, resulting in the nose of the aircraft striking the structure. The collision caused significant damage to the propeller, which subsequently stopped the engine. The impact also resulted in damage to the right wing and the right side of the fuselage. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, sustained no injuries and was able to exit the aircraft without assistance.
The investigation
The AAIB investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot and further enquiries. The investigation focused on the sequence of the taxiing maneuver and the pilot's focus during the period following the solo flight.
Findings
- The primary cause of the accident was pilot distraction following the completion of a significant flight milestone.
- The pilot noted that the successful completion of his first solo flight in two years had diverted his attention away from the immediate requirements of taxiing the aircraft safely.
