What happened
On 23 May 2015, a Flight Design CT2K, registration G-CCNG, was performing a private flight at North Coates Airfield in Lincolnshire. During the landing phase on Runway 05, the pilot encountered a light crosswind originating from the right. While the approach conditions were considered satisfactory, the aircraft bounced upon touchdown and started drifting toward the left side of the runway.
In an attempt to recover the aircraft, the pilot applied power to initiate a go-around maneuver. During this process, the left wing dropped, leading the aircraft to strike the ground. The impact resulted in significant damage to the nose and left main landing gear, which both collapsed. Additional damage was sustained by the wingtips, the propeller, the engine frame, and the firewall.
The investigation
Following the incident, the AAIB examined the circumstances surrounding the loss of control. The investigation focused on the pilot's actions during the transition from touchdown to the go-around attempt. The pilot noted that during the effort to correct the lateral drift and the dropping wing, he may have applied rudder input in the incorrect direction.
