What happened
On 21 July 2014, a Jodel DR1050 Ambassadeur, registration G-ARRE, was performing a private flight when it experienced an incident during its approach to Runway 23 at Coventry Airport. The weather conditions at the time included a north-west wind of approximately 10 to 12 knots.
As the aircraft reached the point of touchdown, the pilot found that the aircraft was not aligned with the runway centerline. In an attempt to rectify the misalignment while on the ground, the pilot applied right rudder. This action resulted in a significant yaw to the right side. The pilot was unable to regain control of the aircraft's direction, which subsequently caused the left main landing gear to collapse. The aircraft eventually came to a stop with its left wing resting on the ground. There were no injuries to the pilot.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The inquiry examined the flight parameters, the environmental conditions, and the pilot's corrective actions. The investigation established that the pilot was wearing a lap and diagonal harness at the time of the event. The pilot's experience on this specific aircraft type was noted as 45 hours out of a total 130 hours of flying experience.
