What happened
While flying at a cruising altitude, the pilot of a Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee, registration G-BAJR, experienced sudden engine vibrations and a rough-running engine. Despite attempts to restore power by applying full throttle and utilizing carburettor heat, the engine failed to maintain sufficient performance to sustain level flight.
Recognizing the necessity of an emergency descent, the pilot prepared for a forced landing. Although the initial plan was to utilize a nearby beach, the presence of bystanders on the sand prompted the pilot to redirect the aircraft toward the water's edge. The aircraft subsequently impacted shallow water on its main landing gear. During the impact, the nose gear separated from the airframe upon contact with the water. The pilot escaped the wreckage without injury and was able to exit the cockpit without assistance.
The investigation
Following the incident, investigators examined the aircraft's engine to identify the source of the power loss and vibration. However, the technical examination of the engine components did not provide a conclusive reason for the mechanical failure.
