What happened
On 1 August 2018, a Thruster T600N 450, registration G-CCDV, was conducting a training flight when it experienced a sudden loss of engine power. The incident occurred at approximately 15:00 UTC near Myerpole Farm, Lancashire.
Following takeoff, the crew had performed routine procedures, including reducing engine power from 3,000 rpm to 2,800 rpm and switching off the electric fuel pump. Shortly after reaching an altitude of roughly 300 ft agl, the engine suffered a major power loss. The instructor took control of the aircraft and attempted to restore fuel flow by reselecting the electric fuel pump to the 'on' position. However, the loss of power was too severe to maintain level flight, necessitating an immediate forced landing.
While maneuvering toward a chosen field, the instructor identified low-power lines crossing the intended path. To avoid a collision with these lines, and recognizing the danger of slowing the aircraft to extend the glide, the instructor opted to divert to a closer field characterized by rougher terrain. Upon touchdown, the nose landing gear collapsed, causing the nose to dig into the earth and the aircraft to overturn. The two crew members sustained minor injuries and were able to exit the aircraft via the doors.
The investigation
Investigators examined the aircraft's engine to determine the source of the power loss. The inspection revealed that the mechanical drive to the camshaft had failed.
