What happened
An aircraft was traveling from Sal, Cape Verde, with an intermediate stop planned for Conakry. The flight was carrying two pilots and two crew members, destined for a mine field located near Lero, Kankan.
During the flight, the aircraft encountered adverse weather conditions characterized by fog and low cloud cover. While navigating through this environment, the plane struck the slope of a mountain. The impact caused the aircraft type/model to disintegrate, resulting in 4 fatalities. No survivors were reported from the crash site.
Findings
Investigations into the accident highlighted several critical factors. The primary cause involved environmental factors such as reduced visibility and low cloud ceilings combined with the presence of mountainous terrain. Additionally, there was a failure in traffic coordination between controllers at Conakry Tower and the Roberts FIR. The crew's decision to continue operations at low altitude despite the weather conditions also played a significant role in the accident.
