What happened
On August 5, 2023, a private flight operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) was attempting to land at Lolland Falster Maribo (EKMB) from Anklam (EDCA). The aircraft, a Cessna 180 H with registration N9902V, was performing a landing on runway 27. At the time of the landing, wind conditions were reported as 180 degrees at 12 knots.
As the pilot was executing the landing roll, the aircraft was struck by a sudden wind gust. This gust caused the aircraft to veer uncontrollably toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft exited the paved surface and entered the safety zone. During this excursion, the right main landing gear collapsed, and the right wing tip made contact with the ground. There were no injuries reported following the event.
The investigation
The Danish Accident Investigation Board (AIB) was notified of the accident by the aerodrome operations manager at 12:50 UTC. The investigation focused on the sequence of events during the landing roll and the environmental conditions present at the time of the excursion. The investigation established that the aircraft sustained substantial damage due to the landing gear failure and wing contact with the ground.
