An Antonov An-10 prototype crashed during a local test flight near Voronezh Airport following multiple engine failures.

What happened

During a scheduled local test flight, an Antonov An-10 prototype experienced a series of critical mechanical issues shortly after departing from Voronezh Airport. While the aircraft was climbing to an altitude of approximately 500 meters, the first engine failure occurred on engine number one. In an effort to manage asymmetrical thrust, the crew reduced the power of engine number four to 40% of its standard output.

The situation escalated seconds later when engine number three also failed. Following established procedures, the crew subsequently reduced power on engine number two to maintain stability. As the aircraft lost the ability to sustain a safe flight altitude, the pilot attempted an emergency landing. During this maneuver, the plane struck a riverbank and crashed.

Findings

The accident resulted in one fatality involving the mechanic, while the remaining four crew members sustained injuries, with two of those categorized as serious.

Probable cause

The primary cause was the failure of the first engine due to overheating resulting from excessive use.
