Following this communication, the crew decided to divert the flight to Kisangani Airport.

During the diversion, the aircraft departed from its intended flight path. While the destination of Kigali is located approximately 100 km southeast of Goma, the aircraft crashed roughly 300 km northwest of Goma. The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered on August 1, 1999.
