What happened
A cargo flight, transporting 12 tons of fruit and carrying five passengers and seven crew members, was operating a route from Andijan to Norilsk with a scheduled stop in Omsk. During the leg from Omsk to Norilsk, the crew diverted to Igarka Airport because of adverse weather at the intended destination. After departing Igarka, the aircraft proceeded to Norilsk, where it encountered heavy rain, mist, and low cloud ceilings of 100 meters.
During the short final phase of the approach, the captain identified that the aircraft was significantly offset from the runway centerline, positioned 330 meters to the left of the extended centerline while only 220 meters from the threshold. In an attempt to correct the approach, the pilot initiated a go-around. During this maneuver, the aircraft reached a pitch angle of 16 degrees. This high angle of attack caused the plane to roll to the left and strike the ground left of the runway. The aircraft traveled approximately 60 meters along the ground before lifting off again.
Following the initial impact, the aircraft climbed to an altitude of 55 meters at a rate of 7 meters per second while maintaining a 14-degree nose-up attitude. However, the aircraft subsequently entered a stall. The aircraft rolled to the right at an angle of 45 degrees and impacted the ground at 200 km/h, eventually coming to rest 1,332 meters beyond the runway end. The accident resulted in 10 fatalities and two serious injuries.
Findings
- The aircraft was operating in low visibility and heavy precipitation.
- An excessive angle of attack during the go-around maneuver led to a loss of control, causing the aircraft to roll and strike the ground.
