What happened
A cargo flight departing from Niš for Amman experienced a critical emergency while cruising at FL210 over the Aegean Sea. The aircraft, which was transporting approximately 12 tons of various goods, including reported armaments such as flare mortar mines, encountered technical difficulties during the flight. Following the report of these issues, the crew was authorized to divert to Kavala Airport.
During the subsequent 180-degree turn and descent toward the diversion airfield, the fourth engine caught fire. While attempting an approach to Kavala Airport at night, the four-engine airplane entered an uncontrolled descent. The aircraft struck an agricultural area situated near the village of Eleftheroupolis at a speed of 202 knots. The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate and ignite. All eight fatalities were recorded among the crew members on board.
Findings
The wreckage was located approximately 12 km west of Kavala Airport. The primary factor leading to the crash was an engine fire occurring during the approach phase of the flight.
