What happened
On the morning of the incident, a four-engine cargo aircraft departed from Khartoum-Haj Yusuf Airport at 07:59 local time, destined for Juba. The flight was transporting 11 tons of cargo and was operated by a crew of four. During the initial climb phase following takeoff, the crew identified a malfunction involving engine number three and notified air traffic control of the failure. In response to the emergency, the aircraft was authorized to perform an emergency landing back at the departure airport.
Upon returning to the airfield, the aircraft touched down on the runway. However, during the landing roll, the aircraft lost directional control and veered off the paved surface. The aircraft subsequently entered a military zone within the airport perimeter, where it caught fire. The impact and subsequent post-crash fire resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. While the four crew members sustained injuries during the event, the accident resulted in two fatalities among individuals located on the ground.
Findings
- The sequence of events was initiated by the failure of engine number three during the climb.
- The loss of control occurred after the aircraft had already touched down on the runway.
