What happened
During a departure from an airstrip near Indra Lake, an aircraft operated by the Research Institute for Thermal Processes (NIITP) experienced a catastrophic failure. The flight was intended to travel to Verkhnyaya Salda. As the aircraft attempted to lift off, it entered a stall at an altitude of approximately 15 meters. The subsequent impact caused the wreckage to catch fire and be destroyed by the flames.
The accident resulted in ten fatalities, consisting of one pilot and nine passengers. At the time of the incident, the second pilot was located within the passenger cabin rather than at the controls.
Findings
Investigations into the crash identified several critical contributing factors related to weight, balance, and crew impairment. The aircraft's takeoff weight exceeded its maximum takeoff weight by 170 kg. Additionally, the center of gravity was positioned too far aft, placing it outside of the safe operational envelope.
Furthermore, the investigation determined that both the captain and the individual acting as the second pilot were under the influence of alcohol. The combination of an overweight aircraft, improper weight distribution, and pilot intoxication led to the loss of control during the takeoff phase.
