Aircraft accident at Zaligei Airport

2 fatalities • Zalingei, Sudan • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a series of hard landings and subsequent engine separation during an approach to Zaligei Airport, resulting in two fatalities.

What happened

During an approach to runway 03 at Zaligei Airport, the crew operated under favorable weather conditions. The aircraft initially made contact with the ground 200 metres beyond the runway threshold with significant force. This impact caused the propeller blades to strike the surface at a distance of 33 metres from the initial contact point.

Following this initial impact, the aircraft underwent a series of bounces. A second touchdown occurred 263 metres further down the runway, followed by a third impact after traveling an additional 15 metres. During the final impact, both engines were severed from the airframe. The aircraft then proceeded to roll for approximately 400 metres before a post-crash fire erupted.

As a result of the accident, there were two fatalities and five injuries. The remaining 37 occupants of the aircraft escaped the wreckage without injury. The aircraft was a total loss due to the intensity of the fire.

Findings

  • The sequence of events was initiated by a hard landing beyond the runway threshold.
  • The structural failure of the engine mounts led to the separation of both engines during the landing sequence.

Probable cause

The aircraft suffered a series of heavy impacts and bounces during landing, leading to engine separation and a subsequent post-crash fire.
