Aircraft overrun during aborted takeoff at Cheboksary Airport

No fatalities • Cheboksary, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced a runway excursion at Cheboksary Airport after the crew initiated an aborted takeoff following V1 speed.

What happened

While performing a takeoff roll at Cheboksary Airport, the flight crew elected to abort the departure after the aircraft had already surpassed V1 speed. Due to the insufficient remaining runway length to complete the stop, the aircraft overran the end of the pavement. During the excursion, the nose landing gear was lost, and the aircraft traveled approximately 270 metres beyond the runway threshold before coming to a halt.

There were no injuries reported among the occupants, all of whom were able to evacuate the aircraft safely. However, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Findings

At the time of the incident, foggy weather conditions had significantly impacted visibility, which was measured at only 350 metres.

Probable cause

The decision to abort the takeoff after passing V1 speed resulted in insufficient distance to stop the aircraft on the available runway.
