What happened
On a scheduled charter flight operating for Naryanmarneftyegaz, an aircraft traveling from Ufa to Naryan Mar was performing a multi-stop route including stops in Perm, Usinsk, and Varandey. While performing the final approach under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) in favorable weather conditions, the aircraft was traveling at a speed of 170 km/h. During this phase, the aircraft experienced a stall, which led to the left wing making contact with a three-meter-high sand dune.
The impact caused the aircraft to crash approximately 4,217 meters before reaching the runway. Following the impact, a post-crash fire erupted. The accident resulted in 28 fatalities, including the captain, the navigator, and 26 passengers, while 24 others sustained injuries. The aircraft was completely destroyed by the forces of the impact and the subsequent fire. At the time of the event, the outside air temperature was -24° C and visibility remained good.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a stall during the final approach phase.
- The collision with a sand dune was a direct result of the aerodynamic stall.
