What happened
During the final approach to Mitú-Fabio A. León Bentley Airport, the flight crew failed to maintain sufficient altitude, causing the aircraft to touch down 8 meters before the runway threshold. Following this initial contact, the aircraft bounced and made a second touchdown approximately 300 meters beyond the runway start.
Upon the second impact, the right main landing gear suffered a structural failure. The loss of gear control caused the aircraft to veer off the runway to the right, where it slid across the apron area. The sequence ended when the aircraft struck a parked Satena PC-6, which was broken into two pieces by the impact. The incident resulted in seven injuries, involving all five crew members on board the moving aircraft and two technicians who were working on the stationary PC-6.
Findings
- The crew did not recognize that the aircraft was flying at an insufficient altitude during the short final phase.
- The aircraft landed short of the runway threshold, leading to a bounce and subsequent gear collapse.
