What happened
While operating a flight from Calí to Villagarzón, the flight crew notified air traffic control regarding mechanical issues involving the left engine. Following instructions to divert to the Pasto-Antonio Nariño Airport, the crew altered their flight path to begin a descent.
During the approach phase, the crew configured the aircraft type with flaps at 38 degrees while maintaining a speed of 250 km/h. After deploying the landing gear, the airspeed increased to 270 km/h, prompting the selection of full flaps. Upon landing on runway 02, which measures 2,312 meters in length, the aircraft could not decelerate sufficiently before the end of the paved surface.
The aircraft exited the runway and descended a 15-meter embankment. The impact caused the airframe to break into two pieces and resulted in the loss of the left wing. Despite the significant damage to the aircraft, all 53 occupants were successfully rescued, with only a small number of individuals sustaining injuries.
Findings
- The aircraft was experiencing technical difficulties with the left engine prior to the diversion.
- The aircraft was unable to stop within the available runway length following touchdown.
