Engine failures lead to fatal crash during cargo flight in Russia

14 fatalities • Chita-Kadala, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo flight operating between Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Novosibirsk crashed short of the runway following a dual engine failure during the approach phase.

What happened

A cargo transport aircraft was performing a multi-leg flight originating in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with scheduled stops in Okha and Chita, before reaching its final destination of Novosibirsk. The plane's payload included several boxes of frozen fish and three Toyota vehicles.

During the approach phase, while the aircraft was executing a turn to align with the runway, the crew experienced the failure of one engine. Despite this loss of power, the flight continued toward the runway. However, during the short final stage of the approach, a second engine failure occurred. This secondary loss of power caused the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly, resulting in a crash approximately 1,657 metres before reaching the runway.

Findings

The accident resulted in 13 fatalities and one passenger who sustained serious injuries. Although there was initially one survivor, the individual later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to 14. The primary factor in the loss of control was the sequential failure of both engines during the final stages of the approach.

Probable cause

The aircraft suffered a total loss of power due to the failure of both engines during the final approach to the runway.
