What happened
After completing two previous legs of its itinerary to Santiago Mariño and Maturín, the aircraft departed from Porlamar bound for Puerto Ordaz. On board were 47 passengers and a crew of four. During the descent phase, approximately 79 km from the destination, the flight crew communicated that they were experiencing issues with aircraft control. Following this report, the flight was given priority, and instructions were issued for an approach and landing on runway 07.
At 10:21 local time, the crew provided a position report indicating they were at an altitude of 3,000 feet and 28 km from the airport. Two minutes later, a distress signal was broadcast over the radio. Shortly thereafter, the aircraft type lost control and impacted an industrial area situated roughly 9 km before the runway threshold. The impact resulted in a post-crash fire.
Findings
The accident resulted in 17 fatalities (comprising three crew members and 14 passengers) and 34 injuries, with 10 of those injuries classified as serious. The primary factor noted during the descent was the loss of aircraft control prior to the impact.
