Runway excursion during landing attempt

No fatalities • Oyem, Gabon • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft veered off the runway and struck a ditch during an aborted landing attempt, resulting in no injuries to the occupants.

What happened

During a standard visual approach, the aircraft touched down approximately 500 metres beyond the threshold of runway 21. As the landing progressed, the crew engaged reverse thrust; however, the aircraft began to drift toward the right side of the runway.

In an attempt to recover, the crew initiated a go-around procedure to abandon the landing. During this maneuver, the aircraft became uncontrollable and exited the runway surface. The aircraft subsequently entered a ditch and came to a stop against a group of trees. The impact resulted in the aircraft being damaged beyond repair.

Findings

  • All 21 occupants successfully evacuated the aircraft without any injuries.
  • The primary factor in the excursion was the loss of directional control following the application of reverse thrust.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway and became uncontrollable during a go-around attempt after deviating from the centerline.
