What happened
During the initial climb phase following departure from Melbourne-Moorabbin Airport, the aircraft encountered a critical mechanical issue. While the plane was at an altitude of approximately 20 feet, the right engine ceased functioning properly.
This loss of power led to an aerodynamic stall. As a result, the aircraft descended and struck the terrain beyond the runway threshold. The impact caused the undercarriage to separate from the airframe. The momentum of the descent carried the plane through a perimeter fence before it eventually came to a stop in an adjacent field.
There were no fatalities or injuries among the two crew members on board. However, the aircraft sustained damage so extensive that it was declared a total loss.
Findings
Investigations into the incident determined that the primary factor was the failure of the right engine immediately following liftoff.
