What happened
During a scheduled cargo operation originating in England with a destination of Australia, an aircraft performed an intermediate stop at Brindisi Airport. While attempting to depart from runway 32, the aircraft veered to the left after traveling approximately 550 meters along the runway surface.
As the plane exited the paved surface, it encountered uneven terrain which resulted in the separation of the left landing gear leg. The aircraft eventually came to a halt 820 meters beyond the runway threshold. Following the excursion, a fire broke out, leading to the total loss of the aircraft type (unspecified model). The accident resulted in two fatalities and four injuries among the crew members on board.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified that the primary contributing factors were strong crosswinds accompanied by gusts and the specific ground conditions present at the edge of the runway.
