What happened
During a flight originating from Kathmandu, the crew initiated their descent toward Meghauli Airfield. As the aircraft approached the runway on final approach, it maintained an excessive altitude, resulting in a touchdown significantly past the runway threshold. Specifically, the aircraft landed approximately 1,148 feet beyond the start of the runway, which has a total length of 3,500 feet.
Due to the wet conditions of the grassy runway surface, the crew was unable to decelerate the aircraft sufficiently. The aircraft type overran the paved area and eventually came to a stop within a nearby ravine. While the impact caused the aircraft to be damaged beyond repair, there were no injuries reported among the 31 occupants on board.
Findings
- The aircraft was positioned too high during the final approach phase.
- The landing occurred too far down the runway, leaving insufficient distance for braking.
- The presence of a wet, grassy runway surface contributed to the inability to stop the vehicle.
