What happened
During a landing on runway 23 at Tamale Airport, a four-engine aircraft was unable to come to a complete stop within the available runway length. As the aircraft continued along the runway, it breached a perimeter fence that had been established to mark a construction zone, as the runway was currently undergoing an extension project. The force of the excursion caused the nose gear to be detached from the airframe. Following the impact with the fence, the aircraft slid for several dozen meters before finally coming to a halt.
Despite the significant impact and the resulting damage to the aircraft, all 76 occupants managed to evacuate the plane without sustaining any injuries. The aircraft itself sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
At the time of the incident, a NOTAM was in effect stating that the usable length of runway 23 had been decreased to 1,860 meters due to ongoing expansion works. This construction involved the presence of various personnel and heavy machinery near the runway. While the NOTAM had advised extra caution for all takeoff and landing operations due to the reduced runway distance and the active work zone, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently before reaching the construction boundary.
