Runway excursion of BAe ATP at Wamena Airport

No fatalities • Wamena, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo flight operated by PT. Deraya veered off the runway during landing at Wamena Airport, resulting in landing gear failure but no injuries.

What happened

On 3ron May 2013, a BAe ATP freighter, registered PK-DGI, was performing a scheduled cargo flight from Sentani Airport to Wamena Airport in Papua. The flight crew consisted of a pilot in command and a second in command. The aircraft departed Sentani at 2127 UTC and was cruising at 12,000 feet.

As the aircraft approached Pass Valley, the controller advised the crew of the weather conditions, noting calm winds, 4 km visibility, and low cloud cover near the final approach area. Upon reaching the final approach for runway 15 at 2207 UTC, the pilot informed the tower that the runway was not yet visible. Two minutes later, the crew reported that the runway had come into sight, and landing clearance was granted.

The aircraft touched down on the centerline of runway 15. However, during the landing roll, approximately 750 meters from the start of the runway, the aircraft drifted toward the left shoulder. Although the pilot attempted to correct the deviation using right rudder and asymmetric reverse thrust, the aircraft continued to veer left. The plane eventually came to a stop on the left shoulder, roughly 10 meters from the runway edge.

During the excursion, the nose landing gear detached from the aircraft and was found 250 meters from the final resting position. The main landing gear also sustained damage, and the propellers were bent. There were no injuries reported during the incident, and the crew evacuated the aircraft safely.

Findings

Flight data recorder analysis indicated that during the landing roll, the torque on the left engine was greater than the torque on the right engine. Additionally, there was no recorded specific approach or landing briefing between the pilots regarding the challenging weather conditions present at the time of arrival.

Probable cause

An imbalance in engine torque during the landing roll caused the aircraft to veer off the runway shoulder.
