Beech Musketeer Super R landing gear failure at Breighton Airfield

Casualties unknown • Breighton Airfield, Humberside, GB

A private flight involving a Beech C24R Musketeer Super R ended in a landing gear collapse after an animal entered the runway path during touchdown.

What happened

On 2 September 2004, a Beech C24R Musketeer Super R, registration N39TA, was performing a private flight at Breighton Airfield, Humberside. The aircraft was on a standard approach to grass Runway 29 when it made a normal touchdown.

Immediately following contact with the runway, a dog ran beneath the right side of the aircraft. This was followed by a loud noise, after which the right landing gear separated from the airframe. As a result of the gear failure, the right wing and the elevator made contact with the ground. While the pilot initially maintained a straight course, the aircraft began to slew toward the right as it slowed, eventually coming to rest in a nearby cornfield. There were no injuries to the pilot or the two passengers, though the dog was killed in the incident.

The investigation

The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the sequence of events following the touchdown on the unfenced runway, which is bordered by open farmland. The physical damage to the aircraft included the loss of the right landing gear and damage to the wing and elevator structures.

Probable cause

The right landing gear detached from the aircraft following an impact with a dog that ran under the aircraft during touchdown.
