What happened
On the scheduled flight from Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) in Karachi to the Bhit Shah Oil Fields, an ATR 42 (registration AP-BJD) experienced a mechanical failure shortly after departure. The aircraft was operating a charter mission to transport 17 employees of the Eni company, including one Italian national, along with a flight crew consisting of a Captain, First Officer, a technician, and security personnel.
After departing JIAP at 02:04:31 UTC, the flight crew identified abnormal operation within the number two engine. In response to this technical issue, the pilots initiated an emergency return to the departure airport. While attempting to join the right-hand downwind pattern for runway 25R, the aircraft lost sufficient lift to maintain flight. The aircraft subsequently crashed approximately 1 nautical mile from runway 07R at Jinnah International Airport. The impact with the ground and the resulting intense post-impact fire led to 21 fatalities, accounting for all individuals on board.
Findings
- The primary factor leading to the loss of control was the abnormal operation of the number two engine following takeoff.
- The accident occurred during the approach phase while the crew was attempting to land at the origin airport.
- The intensity of the post-impact fire contributed to the high fatality count among the passengers and crew.
