What happened
A charter flight operating between Brazzaville and Kinshasa resulted in an aircraft excursion during its arrival phase. The twin engine aircraft was transporting two pilots and 13 passengers, consisting entirely of Air France crew members, at the time of the incident.
As the flight approached Kinshasa, the crew encountered significant meteorological challenges, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorm activity, and intense crosswinds. Upon landing, the aircraft failed to maintain its centerline, deviating to the left and exiting the runway surface. As the plane moved onto the soft ground adjacent to the runway, the landing gear collapsed. The aircraft slid for several dozen meters before coming to a complete stop.
Despite the impact and the structural damage sustained, there were no injuries reported among the 15 occupants. The aircraft was subsequently determined to be a total loss.
Findings
- The primary factor in the excursion was the presence of severe weather conditions, specifically heavy rain and strong crosswinds, during the landing phase.
