Beech 1900 crash during Nellis range mission

5 fatalities • Tonopah, United States of America • Landing (descent or approach)

An Air Force Materiel Command Beech 1900 crashed during a routine support flight between the Nellis range and Tonopah Test Range following the sudden death of the pilot.

What happened

On a scheduled support mission traveling from a classified airstrip within the Nellis range to the Toncase Test Range, a Beech 1900 operated by the Air Force Materiel Command experienced a fatal accident. The flight departed at 03:43. After the pilot confirmed that the runway lights were visible, the aircraft was configured for an approach. The pilot then began a right-hand circling maneuver to establish a visual straight-in approach for runway 32.

During this turning maneuver, the pilot experienced a sudden cardiac death. As the aircraft continued the turn, it entered a gradual descent, eventually striking the ground. The impact caused the aircraft to break apart and ignite.

Findings

Investigations into the accident determined that the pilot had intentionally bypassed federal policies and directives. The pilot had actively misled flight medical examiners by withholding critical information regarding a worsening health condition. Specifically, the pilot had high blood pressure that was not disclosed during Federal Aviation Administration flight physicals and had been taking unauthorized medications for a dangerous medical state.

Probable cause

The pilot's sudden death due to an undisclosed and unmanaged medical condition led to the loss of control of the aircraft.
