What happened
A twin-engine aircraft, performing an ambulance mission, departed from Mérida Airport destined for Galveston. The flight was transporting eight people, including four officers from the Mexican Navy and four civilians. Among the passengers were a two-year-old pediatric patient suffering from burns and the child's mother.
While the crew was attempting to land on Runway 14 at Galveston-Scholes Airport, the aircraft encountered heavy fog. During this approach phase, the plane became uncontrollable and struck the waters of the Bay of Galveston, approximately 3 km north of the airport.
Emergency responders located two survivors, including the mother of the young patient. However, the crash resulted in six fatalities among the total occupants of the twin-engine airplane.
Findings
The primary factor contributing to the loss of control was the presence of thick fog during the approach to the runway.
