Runway excursion during landing involving aircraft landing gear collapse

No fatalities • Hillsboro, United States of America • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a landing gear failure and subsequent runway excursion after impacting the edge of the runway during its landing phase.

What happened

During the landing phase of the flight, the aircraft made contact with the ground prior to reaching the intended runway surface. As the plane proceeded toward the runway, the left main landing gear struck the edge of the pavement. This impact caused the left landing gear to collapse immediately.

Following the structural failure of the gear, the aircraft veered off the side of the runway. The momentum of the excursion carried the plane into a nearby culvert. The impact with the terrain and the edge of the runway resulted in substantial damage to the left wing of the aircraft.

Probable cause

The aircraft departed the runway after the left main landing gear collapsed upon striking the runway edge.
