What happened
A flight departing from Belo Horizonte-Pampulha-Carlos Drummond de Andrade Airport bound for Setubinha-Fazenda Sequóia Airfield ended in a fatal accident during the initial climb phase. The aircraft, a twin engine airplane, was operated with a crew of two pilots and one company employee on board.
Before departing, the captain instructed the co-pilot to execute an "American" takeoff, a maneuver involving maximum engine power followed by a sharp ascent. Following liftoff, the crew retracted the landing gear and maintained a low altitude along the runway to build momentum. Once the aircraft reached its target speed, the crew initiated a 90-degree steep climb.
As the aircraft ascended, it reached an altitude of approximately 1,700 feet within 15 seconds. At this point, the plane experienced a stall and entered an uncontrolled descent. The aircraft struck the ground in a vertical orientation, impacting houses within a residential zone situated roughly 800 meters from the airport. The impact and subsequent fire destroyed the aircraft. There were three fatalities among the occupants, while one person on the ground sustained minor injuries.
Findings
The accident was precipitated by the crew's decision to perform an extreme climbing maneuver that led to an aerodynamic stall.
