What happened
During the final approach phase toward the runway 10 threshold at San Juan-Isla Verde Airport, the pilot lost control of the aircraft. The plane descended into a residential neighborhood within the Barrio Obrero district, striking several houses approximately 4 km before reaching the runway. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft and caused six fatalities among the occupants. While there were no survivors on board, the crash also resulted in several injuries to individuals located on the ground.
Findings
Official investigations concluded that the accident was the result of an uncontrolled descent triggered by wake turbulence. Several contributing factors were identified during the inquiry, including a failure to adhere to established flight procedures. Additionally, investigators noted issues regarding communications and navigation equipment, specifically malfunctions involving transmitters or receivers. These technical failures rendered the crew unable to maintain contact on the terminal radar service area frequency.
