What happened
During the cruise phase of flight, the pilot experienced a sudden loss of control while operating the aircraft. The plane subsequently entered a steep dive, leading to an impact with a body of water located in the vicinity of Acworth, Georgia.
There was one person on board at the time of the accident, and the pilot sustained fatal injuries. The aircraft, which was owned by C. W. Matthews, was completely destroyed upon impact with the lake.
Findings
Investigations into the crash determined that the primary reason for the loss of control was a structural failure within the aircraft's wing. Specifically, the lower left wing spar, consisting of an elliptical steel tube, suffered a fatigue fracture which compromised the integrity of the flight controls.
