What happened
While attempting to land at his home airport, the pilot initially performed a visual approach but aborted the maneuver because of ground fog. After obtaining an instrument flight rules clearance, the pilot proceeded with an RNAV/GPS approach, which was also discontinued due to the ongoing fog conditions. Following a missed approach, a second RNAV/GPS approach was attempted.
During this final approach, the pilot lost visual contact with the ground and initiated a go-around. During this phase of flight, the aircraft struck trees located approximately 800 feet to the right of the runway. The wreckage remained upright upon impact and was subsequently destroyed by a fire. There were no reported fatalities or injuries in this incident.
Findings
An investigation of the aircraft following the accident showed no mechanical issues that would have prevented standard operation. However, the pilot noted that during the go-around, the right engine exhibited a slower acceleration rate compared to the left engine. The pilot reported being distracted by monitoring these engine instruments. Consequently, the pilot failed to notice a rightward yaw and was unable to correct the resulting loss of altitude before the aircraft collided with the trees.
