Engine failure and ditching of twin-engine aircraft near Manila

No fatalities • Manila, Philippines • Landing (descent or approach)

A twin-engine charter flight experienced consecutive engine failures during its approach to Manila, resulting in an emergency ditching in Manila Bay.

What happened

A charter flight departing from Taytay-Sandoval-Cesar Lim Rodriguez Airport toward Manila experienced a series of mechanical failures during its approach. The aircraft, a twin engine model, was operating with a crew of two pilots and one passenger on board.

During the descent toward Manila, the left engine experienced a failure. After notifying Air Traffic Control of the emergency, the crew continued the approach, but the right engine subsequently lost power as well. Due to the loss of both engines, the aircraft was unable to sustain its assigned altitude. In an effort to manage the emergency, the crew attempted to ditch the aircraft in Manila Bay, approximately 3 km from the shore.

Following the impact with the water, the aircraft remained buoyant for several minutes. This period allowed the three occupants to successfully evacuate the cabin. Shortly after the evacuation, the aircraft submerged and sank. While all individuals were rescued, the wreckage of the aircraft was not recovered.

Findings

  • The aircraft suffered a consecutive loss of power in both engines during the approach phase.

Probable cause

The aircraft experienced a total loss of power following the sequential failure of both engines during the approach to Manila.
