What happened
During an approach to runway 06 at Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the crew encountered severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, and cumulonimbus clouds. Wind conditions were reported at 290 degrees with gusts reaching 37 knots. Following the flight from Izmir-Adnan Menderes Airport, the aircraft touched down on a wet runway surface. Due to insufficient stopping distance, the aircraft overran the end of the runway. After exiting the paved surface, the plane veered slightly to the left and descended a 25-meter embankment, where the fuselage broke into three separate sections.
As a result of the accident, there were 3 fatalities among the passengers. The remaining 180 occupants were evacuated from the wreckage and transported to nearby medical facilities to receive treatment for various injuries.
Findings
Preliminary details suggest the aircraft made contact with the runway approximately 1,500 meters past the threshold of the 3,000-meter runway. A significant contributing factor appears to be the landing touchdown point being too far down the runway combined with a notable tailwind component and a wet surface, which prevented the aircraft from decelerating sufficiently before the runway end.
