Runway excursion at Trabzon Airport involving aircraft from Ankara

No fatalities • Trabzon, Turkey • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft traveling from Ankara to Trabzon veered off the runway during a night landing in heavy rain, resulting in an engine separation.

What happened

On the night of the incident, an aircraft departed from Ankara-Esenboğa Airport, destined for Trabzon. The flight proceeded without incident until the arrival phase. During the approach to runway 11, the flight crew encountered heavy rainfall. Upon touchdown at a speed of 143 knots, the aircraft traveled approximately 2,400 metres along the runway before deviating to the left.

The aircraft exited the paved surface, crossed a grassy area, and descended down a steep embankment. During this excursion, the right engine was sheared from the airframe and fell into the sea, while the aircraft came to a stop a short distance above the water level. Despite the severity of the excursion, all 168 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury.

Findings

Preliminary reports suggest that the excursion was triggered by an issue involving the right engine following the landing touchdown. The investigation points toward asymmetrical thrust and unintentional forward thrust as the primary factors that caused the aircraft to veer off the runway.

Probable cause

An engine malfunction involving unintended forward and asymmetrical thrust following touchdown.
